Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELMDirect website, Clifford Chance, CMS, and Rymarz Zdort have all worked on six reported Energy/Natural Resources deals in Poland so far this year – creating a three-way tie atop the law firm leader board in the practice?

White & Case, which has worked on five reported Energy/Natural Resources deals so far this year in Poland, is right behind, and Allen & Overy and DWF, both of which have worked on four Polish Energy/Natural Resources deals this year, are close as well.

In terms of individual lawyers, CMS Partner Piotr Ciolkowski, who has worked on all six of the reported CMS deals, leads the market. His colleague, CMS Partner Blazej Zagorski, is second, with five.

Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELMDirect website, lawyers from two Turkish law firms have published the most legal analysis articles on the CEELM website in the past twelve months? Zahide Altunbas Sancak, Partner at Guleryuz & Partners in Istanbul, has authored or co-authored the most, with 30, while ELIG Gurkaynak Attorneys at Law Partner Gonenc Gurkaynak is a close second, with 28.

Third place is held by Zahide Altunbas Sancak’s colleague at Guleryuz & Partners, Tarik Guleryuz, who has authored or co-authored 25 such articles, and fourth place is held by Gurkaynak’s colleague at ELIG Gurkaynak Attorneys at Law, Partner Nazli Nil Yukaruc, who has authored or co-authored nine.

The firm with the most thought leadership articles published on the CEELM website in the past twelve months is Schoenherr, with 71 – almost six a month! Guleryuz & Partners is second, with a still-impressive 58.

Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELMDirect website, Selih & Partnerji (with six) and Jadek & Pensa (with four) have worked on the most reported deals in Slovenia over the past 12 months?

Coming in right behind those two table-leaders is Ketler & Partners, the Law Office of Karmen Rebesco, and Rojs, Peljhan, Prelesnik & Partners, all of which have worked on three reported deals in the country over the past year.

Indeed, Selih & Partnerji Partner Natasa Pipan Nahtigal has worked on a remarkable (and market-leading) five of those deals herself over that time, and her colleague Spela Remec is tied with Jadek & Pensa Partners Andraz Jadek and Ozbej Merc, RPPP Partner Grega Peljhan, and Fabiani, Petrovic, Jeraj, Rejc Attorneys at Law Partner Jernej Jeraj for second place with two.

Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELM Direct website, Schoenherr Vienna Partner Christoph Moser worked on ten Capital Markets deals in 2021 – the most of any partner in Central and Eastern Europe? Omer Collak, with Paksoy in Turkey, was a close second with nine, and seven lawyers tied for third place with six.

Reached for comment, Moser was complimentary of his colleagues, saying, “it is a true pleasure that our clients have placed such great trust in us in the past year. This success is above all the result of a great team that works seamlessly together in several CEE jurisdictions.”

Indeed, it is not rare to find Moser’s name on the top of the leader board. Moser has worked on 31 reported Capital Markets deals in the nine-year history of CEE Legal Matters, second only to Wolf Theiss Partner Alexander Haas (who has worked on 34), and one more than Avellum Partner Glib Bondar (30) in that period.

Damyan Leshev and Nikolay Bebov of Tsvetkova Bebov & Partners in Sofia have both worked on three reported Capital Markets deals so far in 2022, giving them the lead in this year’s table.

Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELMDirect website, Dentons has worked on the most deals reported on the CEE Legal Matters website this year: a remarkable 44 as of May 24, 2022. CMS is in second place with 33 deals reported on the website, with Clifford Chance (31), Sorainen (29), and Allen & Overy (25) rounding out the top five.

This strong start to 2022 follows on a strong 2021 for these firms. Dentons finished second in the table last year with a total of 107 reported deals, behind Sorainen, which led all firms with 117. Clifford Chance (89), CMS (88), and White & Case (75) rounded out last year’s top five, with Allen & Overy (62) in tenth place.

Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELMDirect website, the NKO Law Firm (with four) and SOG Law Firm (with two) are the only two law firms in Serbia to have reported working on more than one Real Estate deal in that country in the past year, with a total of 14 other firms reporting having worked on one.

Real Estate seems to be a relatively dormant practice across the former Yugoslavia, in fact. In Croatia, for instance, none of the 11 firms that have reported working on a Real Estate deal in the past year worked on two, and the same is true both of the two firms that reported working on a Real Estate deal in Montenegro and the one firm that reported working on a Real Estate deal in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Surprisingly, no major or commercial law firm has reported working on a Real Estate deal in the past 12 months in North Macedonia or Slovenia.

It’s been a good start of the year for Polish law firms. Indeed, Did You Know that, according to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELM Direct website, Dentons Warsaw Partner Bartlomiej Kordeczka has worked on the most deals reported on the CEE Legal Matters website so far this year – eight – placing him just ahead of fellow Warsaw lawyers Andrzej Stosio and Blazej Zagorski, of Norton Rose Fulbright and CMS, respectively, both of whom have worked on 7?

Indeed, eight of the top ten lawyers in terms of the number of deals reported on the CEE Legal Matters website so far in 2022 are from Poland. The only two lawyers in the top ten not based in Warsaw are Dalia Tamasauskaite-Ziliene, of TGS Baltic in Lithuania, and Eva Talmacsi of CMS in London, both of whom have worked on 5 deals.

Did you know that the Sorainen law firm, in the Baltics, has had the most client matters reported on the CEE Legal Matters website since the site’s launch in December 2013?

According to the Activity Rankings function of the CEELM Direct website, some 543 deals, disputes, or other client matters involving Sorainen lawyers have been reported on the website. Dentons is a very close second, with 536 deals, and CMS is third, with 473.

Indeed, three of the top ten firms overall come from the Baltics – Cobalt is in 5th place with 375 client matters reported on CEELM, and Ellex is in 9th place with 308 – and a fourth firm, TGS Baltic, is in 11th place with 261. As impressive as those rankings are already, they would undoubtedly be even higher if they included the deals involving the work of those firms’ predecessors, as both Ellex and Cobalt were formed in 2015 from the former Lawin and Raidla Lejins & Norcous law firms, and TGS Baltic replaced Tark Grunte Sutkiene in 2017.

The first truly domestic law firm – a national champion, with offices only in one country – to appear on the list is Ukraine’s Sayenko Kharenko, which, as of May 5, 2022, had worked on some 173 client matters reported on the CEE Legal Matters website.
