Open Call for GCs: 2016 Best Practices Survey

Once again, and consistent as always with its mission to inform and serve in-house counsel across Central and Eastern Europe, CEE Legal Matters has launched the 2016 version of its highly regarded CEE Corporate Counsel Survey, providing an opportunity for General Counsel and Heads of Legal across CEE to share their preferences, key strategies, and best practices with one another.

As always, the results of the survey will be presented and analyzed in the widely-read and influential CEE Corporate Counsel Best Practices Handbook, and those Chief Legal Officers who participate in the Survey — as almost 700 did last year — will receive a hard copy free of charge.

The survey is available here, and the deadline for completing it is August 15.

This year’s Survey and Handbook — both sponsored by Baker & McKenzie, Slaughter and May, ELIG, DLA Piper, and Karanovic & Nikolic — will focus on a number of subjects of particular relevance to Chief Legal Officers, including their priorities for 2016, perceived legal risk areas, managing external counsel, and more. The Handbook will also include, for the first time, an extensive and useful CEE Law Firm Directory.

David Stuckey, Executive Editor of CEE Legal Matters, believes the Survey-and-Handbook are ever-more important tools for Chief Legal Officers in Central and Eastern Europe. “Knowing what your peers are doing, and how, is critical to success in any profession — and for lawyers perhaps especially so. But as chances to share information about best practices and useful strategies to peers and counterparts in the in-house world are few and far between, this is an especially valuable opportunity. As a result, we hope General Counsel and Heads of Legal across CEE will take the 10-15 minutes necessary to complete the Survey, and we are delighted to reward those that do with the resulting Handbook, free of charge.”

In addition to receiving a free hard copy of the report itself, participants who complete the survey will, as last year, be entitled to a 40% discount on tickets to the 2016 General Counsel Summit, scheduled for October 6-7 in Istanbul.

Radu Cotarcea, Managing Editor of CEE Legal Matters — which is organizing and hosting the GC Summit — believes the location and concept of the event are, in combination, uniquely significant this year. “As CEE itself continues to recover, economically, from years of dormancy, and as investment comes back into CEE, the region also finds itself right at the center of controversy and political and ethnic upheaval. From the refugees fleeing war and destabilization in the Middle East to the various factions and ideologies competing for dominance in Europe itself, Southeastern Europe is right at the epicenter of the world’s focus. We’re proud to place our event in this historical and geopolitical center, and we believe the location will inspire significant conversation and consideration about how the crises of the moment are affecting and will affect business across the region.”

“Not to mention,” Cotarcea said, “Istanbul has a special place in my heart, and I love sharing it with friends. We’re committed to making sure everyone has a wonderful time.”

The 2016 GC Summit is sponsored by Baker & McKenzie, Slaughter and May, ELIG, Moral Law, Kolcuoglu & Demirkan, and Vasil Kisil & Partners — we thank them for their support.

The 2014 and 2015 reports are available in electronic format here and here, respectively.

  • 2015 CEE Corporate Counsel Handbook Now Published

Rejoice! The 2015 CEE Legal Matters Corporate Counsel Handbook has been published and is now available on the CEE Legal Matters website — with hard copies on their way to the over 600 General Counsel and Heads of Legal whose responses are reflected within it.

The 2015 version of the Handbook — supported by DLA PiperGide Loyrette Nouel, and Wolf Theiss — is our second, following last year’s highly successful and widely-read first edition.

This year’s Handbook covers critical elements of the General Counsel role, including: Their schedules and daily priorities, their perceived sources of and responses to risk, how and when they turn to and manage External Counsel, sources of market intelligence and legal/regulatory updates, and much more. In addition, this year’s Handbook contains comments, perspectives, and insight gleaned from the many interviews with General Counsel contained in the CEE Legal Matters magazine over the past years, used to illustrate and illuminate the data from the survey. Finally, the Handbook concludes with a useful directory of firms from across CEE whose work has been reported on the CEE Legal Matters website, along with links to those articles.

Participants, readers, and all General Counsel who want to discuss these findings, share information with their peers, or learn more about Best Practices and common strategies in the industry are encouraged to join us on September 10-11 at the GC Summit in Budapest, an unprecedented and unparalleled opportunity for senior in-house counsel to engage, interact, network, and develop. Time and space are, however, limited, so interested individuals should sign up soon.

  • GC Best Practices Handbook is Out Now!

General Counsel have stressful jobs. They are expected to be managers, advisors, administrators, supervisors, consultants, and HR experts, among other things — all while trying to find the time to do the legal work that is theoretically their primary responsibility.

And their challenging roles require not only legal expertise, but also business/industry understanding, risk assessment skills, and management knowledge. Keeping all those plates spinning would be difficult even when those lawyers are in regular communication with one another to exchange ideas, information, and best practices.

But, all too often, they are not. Instead, being a General Counsel or Head of Legal is often an insular job, with far fewer opportunities for communication and exchange of information with peers than senior lawyers in private practice enjoy. Accordingly, and in response to dozens of requests for the information, the Editors of CEE Legal Matters have — in consultation with an elite Advisory Panel consisting of General Counsel from some of the biggest companies in the world — created the 2014 CEE Corporate Counsel Best Practices Handbook, to rave reviews. The Handbook, which was based on a survey prepared in consultation with the Advisory Panel to guarantee that the results would be topical, relevant, and informative, contains the committed responses of almost 700 General Counsel and Heads of Legal across Central and Eastern Europe. The participants were asked about subjects as diverse as hiring/recruiting, time management, external counsel management, communication and managerial styles, and much more.

The size of the response alone is evidence of the thirst among senior in-house lawyers for information about their peers, about their performance, and about their choices. And the initial feedback from the few who have seen the final report before its publication was overwhelmingly positive.

The Handbook was sponsored by Edwards Wildman, Freshfields, CMS, Tuca Zbarcea & Asociatii, and Stratula Mocanu & Asociatii. Go get it now — you’ll be glad you did.

  • Oh Sirius, June Issue Available to All!

The Dog Days of Summer, as the Greeks called this time of year, associating the extremely hot weather with Sirius — the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog), and the brightest star in the night sky. The Romans went so far as to sacrifice a red dog in April to appease the rage of Sirius, out of a belief that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.

But that’s foolish, and modern types, like us, know better. We believe in science, not superstition.

So we know that Sirius’s rage is sated not by a Red Dog … but by the news that all the content from the June 2014 issue of CEE Legal Matters magazine — the one with the big gorilla in a suit on the cover — is now moved from behind the paywall! Sirius, and other non-subscribers can now enjoy the articles, opinions, interviews, and other fascinating features that those brave and ambitious individuals who have invested in the advantage of the two-month head start have already read, assimilated, and acted upon.

Let’s review, shall we, Sirius? The Guest Editorial in the June issue is an essay about the unpredictability of CEE practice by Schoenherr Partner Marcus Piuk. The Across the Wire feature includes the popular Summary of Deals and Cases and Summary of Partner Moves that subscribers generally turn to first. Articles in The Frame – as always, informative, entertaining, and enlightening – include “Roots in Revolution” – an article about the American law firm that ties its presence in Poland to the 1980s Solidarity movement – and Part II of the special “Glass CEEling” report on female partnership opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe. Other Frame articles include “Moving In, Moving On”, a profile of two lawyers in Turkey adapting to non-legal Country Manager positions, “Behind the Deal”, a conversation with the lawyer responsible for engineering LEGO’s new plant in Hungary, and a special CEE Legal Matter Round-Table conversation on the future of international law firms in CEE.

The Market Spotlight in the June issue fell on Russia, with a Guest Editorial from Sergei Voitishkin, the Managing Partner of Baker & McKenzie, and “Bad for Business” – a conversation with Managing Partners at international law firms in Russia about the effect Western sanctions are having on their business. The Market Spotlight also contains in-depth conversations with Heads of Legal for Russia at Danfoss, ABB, PPF Life Insurance, Lukoil, and Groupon, as well as the Expat on the Market interview with Doran Doeh, a Partner and Russia expert at Dentons in Moscow.

The subject of the Experts Review feature is Privatization/PPP, with experts from  top ranked law firms in the field from across CEE providing analysis and perspective on the state of affairs in their markets. Finally, the popular Top Sites feature focuses on law firm websites in Hungary and Russia.

So we say: Oh Great Sirius, please hear our plea: Lessen the extreme heat you inflict upon us, and be informed, educated, entertained, and pleased by the news that the June issue is now available to you!

And … we hope everyone else will do the same.

  • Last Call General Counsel Survey

Today is the last day for General Counsel to have their voices heard in the CEE Legal Matters 2014 Corporate Counsel Best Practices Handbook.

The main goal of the research project is to centralize best practices of GCs/Heads of Legal into a useful report. The Handbook focuses on critical aspects of the GC role, such as:

    – building and managing an internal legal team

    – working with external counsel

    – managing compliance within a company

    – and others.

The survey was prepared with the input of the Advisory Board of General Counsel and Heads of Legal from the region.

Over 3200 General Counsel, Heads of Legal, and Legal Managers throughout CEE jurisdictions have been invited to participate in the survey — and close to 650 have already answered the call.

We are excited with the participation rates and look forward to processing the submissions we received. If you would like to receive a copy of the result report, it is not too late to participate in the survey.

All data collected will be kept completely confidential, will not be shared with any third parties, and will be used strictly to generate the mentioned report. The results will be shared only as percentages and participants to the survey will not be identified in any manner.

The sponsors of the project are: Edwards Wildman, CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz, Freshfields, and Tuca Zbarcea & Asociatii.

As always with the publication of a new issue, the electronic version of articles from the previous issue will be taken from behind the pay-wall and made freely accessible to subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

    Launching Issue 2

     Unveiling Issue 2

So, with the publication of the June 2014 issue, non-subscribers can finally find out what they missed in April. The April Market Spotlight, Experts Review, The Frame, The Legal Ticker Transaction/Deal list, and much more, generated great attention and response. Now non-subscribers will know why.

The full electronic version of the April Issue is now available here.

The April Experts Review feature focused on Competition, with insightful, in-depth analysis from experts across CEE on Competition matters in their markets. The special Guest Editorial was written by the Managing Partner of the St. Petersburg office of Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners, and the April Inside Insight feature was an interview with Turkish lawyer Ece Gursoy, the Chief Legal Officer at Lightsource Renewable Energy, Limited, in England.

The April Market Spotlight was on Romania, for instance, and it included a revelatory exploration and analysis of Romanian bar limitations on law firm advertising, a guest editorial from the Managing Partner of DLA Piper in Bucharest, interviews with Clifford Chance Badea’s Perry Zizzi and Schoenherr’s Dianele Iacona, and a profile of Gheorghe Buta, Deputy Managing Partner at Musat & Associates, on his leadership of the country’s leading Litigation practice.

There’s much more. Subscribers enjoyed Part I of a special CEE Legal Matters report on Women in Partnership across CEE, with comprehensive data from leading firms in each CEE market. (Part II will appear in the June issue of the CEE Legal Matters magazine). Other features included a conversation with senior lawyers in Austria on why the biggest regional law firms in CEE prefer to stay out of Russia, and a discussion with senior lawyers in the Czech Republic about how their firms survived the global financial crisis.

And there’s still more. The April issue featured a report from Sayenko Kharenko on how the only Ukrainian firm with a Crimea Desk is negotiating the troubled times in that region, how a Hungarian law professor created his nation’s first accredited LL.M. program, and how a Brazilian law firm has begun expanding its reach across Europe.

    And there’s still more.
