  • The Final Countdown: Conferences, Awards, and Celebrations on the CEE Legal Matters Calendar

It’s April, and the Dealer’s Choice forum and CEE Legal Matters Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony on June 6 and the fourth annual GC Summit in Prague are only two short months away, making this the ideal time for a quick preview of the two most important networking and professional development events for the region’s legal elite on the calendar.

The first-ever Dealer’s Choice event, to be held in the Congress Centre of the Czech National Bank building, is designed as a unique and valuable networking event for private practitioners from across CEE, with special guests from the United Kingdom and China. The forum’s agenda will focus on matters of high relevance to law firm management in the region, including suggestions for the development and strengthening of referral relationships between domestic and international firms, a consideration of the changing technology available to lawyers, a review of how the widely-reported political changes in the region are likely to affect investment, and a CEE Legal Matters Special Panel on Chinese investment in CEE. Needless to say, the schedule has been carefully designed to provide substantial time for informal conversation and networking.

That evening attendees will reconvene in the nearby Slovansky Dum for the first CEE Legal Matters Annual Banquet and Deal of the Year Awards Ceremony. The shortlist of deals — and the firms which worked on them — were announced on February 20, 2018, and the winners of the awards in 17 CEE countries  purely peer-selected, making them the most relevant and transparent legal awards in Central and Eastern Europe  will be announced on stage at the Banquet. The event, which will feature live music and a gathering of peers, counterparts, and friends from across Europe, is destined to become an annual not-to-be-missed celebration of the CEE legal community.

On the following morning, June 7, the annual two-day General Counsel Summit will begin at the Czech National Bank building. Over 300 senior in-house counsel are expected to attend this year’s conference, making it far and away the premier event for in-house legal professionals in Europe. Slaughter & May will serve as Chairman Sponsor for the third year-running, an association that began in 2016 in Istanbul and carried through the 2017 Summit in Warsaw.

A limited number of tickets and sponsorship slots remain available for both events, and those interested in learning more are encouraged to visit the event websites or contact CEE Legal Matters directly.

Finally, it’s worth remembering that CEE Legal Matters is hosting three additional one-day GC Summits for in-house lawyers in the fall of 2018. Information about the Turkey GC Summit, Balkan GC Summit, and Hungary GC Summit will be published soon, and in the interim can be obtained by contacting CEE Legal Matters directly.

It’s a busy year for CEE Legal Matters, all part of our mission to be the leading source of news and information to the lawyers and legal community of Central and Eastern Europe. We look forward to seeing you all in Prague, Istanbul, Belgrade, and Budapest.

  • CEE Deal of the Year Nominees

With great pride and excitement, CEE Legal Matters is proud to announce the final nominees for the 2017 CEE Deal of the Year awards in 17 different CEE countries.

The complete list of nominees — three for each of the 17 countries for which the award will be made — can be found here.

CEE Legal Matters would like to congratulate all the nominees and thank both those firms that submitted deals for consideration and the members of the Shortlist Panels in each qualifying country who participated in selecting the final nominees. With this announcement, the nominees they selected will be passed along to our elite Final Selection Committee, consisting of 16 prominent legal practitioners from across CEE tasked with carefully evaluating all nominations and casting ballots for the ultimate award-winners. The CEELM editors will collect and tabulate the responses prior to the June 6 Awards Banquet.

The CEE Legal Matters CEE Deal of the Year Awards — especially valuable for being exclusively peer-selected, with no possibility of commercial bias or editorial prejudice — are expected to become a key part of the annual CEE calendar, as is the annual Awards Banquet and celebration and the Dealer’s Choice conference and international law firm networking event, held the day of the banquet, with speakers drawn exclusively from award nominees. Tickets and tables for both events will be made available for sale soon.

The Dealer’s Choice event and Awards Banquet this year will lead up to CEE Legal Matters’ annual GC Summit, scheduled to take place the following two days, and which in 2018 will for the first time host 300 senior in-house counsel from across the region. Valuable sponsorship opportunities — the only way for private practitioners to attend and participate in the GC Summit — are available now as well.

Good luck to the nominees, and we look forward to seeing everyone on June 6 in Prague!

The nominees — three for each of the 18 CEE countries for which the award will be made — are selected by a panel of lawyers on the ground in each jurisdiction, reviewing submissions coming from across CEE. The winners, which will ultimately be selected from those final nominees by a separate expert panel of 16 specialists, will be announced at the CEE Legal Matters Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony in Prague on June 6, 2018. The banquet will conclude a full day of international networking and best practices exchange at the first annual Dealer’s Choice conference held that same day, with speakers drawn from the final nominees.

  • Dentons Claims the Prize: The 2018 CEELM Budapest Law Firm Bowling Challenge

Dentons Claims the Prize: The 2018 CEELM Budapest Law Firm Bowling Challenge

After a long year of waiting, law firms from Hungary finally had the opportunity to show off their bowling skills again last night, as the second year of the CEE Legal Matters Budapest Law Firm Bowling Challenge brought 14 four-person teams together for an intense challenge, with the proceeds donated to the winning team’s charity of choice.

The bowling balls and the minutes flew fast, and although the teams took the challenge seriously, there was little doubt that the primary goals of the evening – having fun and relaxing with colleagues and counterparts – were met. When the final ball was rolled, at the end of the second round, there was little doubt as to the final result, as 2018 Champion Dentons (with 850 points) claimed the trophy.

Following Dentons was Nagy & Trocsanyi 810). Szecsenyi & Partners (782); Hogan Lovells (773); KNP Law (749); DLA Piper (726); Sar and Partners (697); Allen & Overy (627); OPL (660); SBGK (655); Schoenherr (651); Lakatos Koves & Partners (648); Szabo, Kelemen & Partners (614); and CMS (537).

The highest individual score of the night belonged to Bernadett Lengyel from SBGK, who racked up an impressive 158.

The charity organization chosen by Dentons to receive the evening’s proceeds is Onkentes Tuzolto, Muszaki-mento es Vizimento Egyesulet, a Hungarian NGO that works to strengthen the healthcare system in the Hungarian communities of Dunakeszi, Godollo, and Fot by improving family doctor and home-pediatrician care services, as well as emergency service settlements in the region. “Charity organizations are really important to us, and we choose this one because they collect money for children,” said Gabor Feher, a key member of the victorious Dentons team.

Feher went on to express enthusiasm for the event in general, noting that there are few such opportunities for lawyers to meet in a social environment in Hungary. “In my opinion there is a need for this, because we meet each other on certain cases, but never in a more informal environment. So, thanks CEE Legal Matters for this opportunity.”

Adam Dunai, a lawyer at OPL, agreed. “It is a very good idea to bring firms together like this. It’s a good way to relax after a long working day, but also to get to know people from other Hungarian firms.” OPL teammate Peter Toth was also enthusiastic. “It was really great to compete with the other firms, we liked the challenge, and luckily we didn’t end up in the last place. We didn’t win either, I think we finished somewhere in the middle. Anyways, we heard that next year might be darts, we are getting prepared, and we’ll be unbeatable.”

Several teams admitted to training for the event seriously. “We had three preparation sessions in-house, and we fought with my colleagues for the four places to be on the team,” said lawyer Olga Peter-Szabo, a key member of the Nagy & Trocsanyi team. “We didn’t win – last year we were fourth, now we came second – but we are really proud of all our members. It was an awesome night, we had a good game, and lots of fun.”

“I think everybody brought positive energy,” said CEE Legal Matters Events Producer Vaida Stockunaite, smiling as she recalled the night. “And we hope it provided a good opportunity to relax with colleagues outside the office.”
